Mary Penny Kelley, Senior Advisor for Policy and Innovation at the NC Department of Environmental Quality (“DEQ”), will present and discuss DEQ Working Priorities and Themes. As part of a new administration that took office in early 2017, Ms. Kelley has been working with senior executives at DEQ to capture the priorities and themes of DEQ’s ongoing role in the environment and energy sectors. The three working priorities of the department are: (1) Creating and maintaining a healthy environment; (2) Achieving environmental gains through infrastructure projects; and (3) Supporting reliable and resilient energy for NC. Many themes that wind through those priorities include relying on science for data-driven decisions, closing the rural divide, addressing environmental justice concerns, providing effective access to public records, and improving stakeholder engagement processes. Ms. Kelley will present greater detail on the current working priorities and themes and request observations from the audience on current trends, avoidable risks, and potential opportunities in each area.
