The Environmental Footprint of Shale Gas and Hydraulic Fracturing

As hydraulic fracturing becomes more widespread in the United States, the safety and viability of this practice has become the topic of much debate.  North Carolina is now considering the implications of developing legislation that will allow fracking in NC.  Dr. Rob Jackson, the Nicholas Chair of Global Environmental Change at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, has conducted detailed research of the environmental footprint of shale and gas hydraulic fracturing in other states and is a recognized leader in this developing field.  Dr. Jackson will discuss the challenges facing North Carolina and other states in considering shale gas exploration and extraction, what lessons have already been learned, and what questions remain unanswered as we forge ahead in the quest for energy sources.
