Surface Water Identification Training & Certification

November 14-17, 2023

Class Location: Reedy Creek Nature Center, Charlotte NC

Staff of Axiom Environmental (John Dorney), Natural Resource Consultants (Jennifer Burdette), Sage Ecological Services (Nikki Thomson), and Penrose Environmental (Dave Penrose) will conduct a 4-day course on the latest version (Version 4.11, September 1, 2010) of the North Carolina methodology for identifying intermittent and perennial streams and their origins from November 14-17, 2023 in Charlotte, NC. This class is organized by and taught through the NC Association of Environmental Professionals (NCAEP). This lecture and field course will focus on the method, which is the standard method used across the state and the southeast by the NC Division of Water Resources (DWR) and many local governments, to identify intermittent and perennial streams and their origins. The course will be taught in and near Charlotte, NC and will focus on piedmont streams located in three different Level IV ecoregions – Southern Outer Piedmont, Slate Belt, and Triassic Basin, in varying conditions. The class will be taught at Reedy Creek Nature Center in Charlotte.  Also, in keeping with those protocols, students will be asked to use their own personal vehicles to and from field sites (see the longer note below). This class is offered in coordination with the DWR and follows the same curriculum as the course taught by DWR instructors.  Upon successful completion, students will receive a Certificate of Training which can be used with delegated or designated local governments. The cost of the class is $870 for NCAEP members and $895 for non-NCAEP members. Please feel free to contact John Dorney at jdorney@axiomenvironmental.org or by phone at 919-522-6364 if you have any additional questions.
