Brad Ives, Assistant Secretary for Natural Resources, will provide an update regarding the merger of the Natural Heritage and Clean Water Management Trust Funds and their integration within the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.  The merged Clean Water Management Trust Fund will continue to enhance North Carolina’s surface water quality while also protecting the most outstanding elements of our state’s natural heritage. Mr. Ives joined the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources in January 2013 as the assistant secretary for Natural Resources. In that role, he oversees the divisions of Marine Fisheries and Parks and Recreation as well as the Office of Conservation, Planning and Community Affairs, the N.C. Natural Heritage Trust Fund, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, the state aquariums, and the North Carolina Zoo.

Misty Buchanan, Natural Heritage Program Inventory and Information Services Section Chief will provide an update on the Natural Heritage Program's plans for the new fiscal year. The Natural Heritage Program serves as an information clearinghouse in support of conservation of the rarest and most outstanding elements of natural diversity in the state. These elements of natural diversity include plants and animals which are so rare or the natural communities which are so significant that they merit special consideration as land-use decisions are made. By consolidating information about hundreds of rare species and natural communities, the program ensures that the public is able to get the information that is needed to weigh the ecological significance of various sites, and to evaluate ecological impacts.
